Menopause is more than just hot flashes and night sweats. While the symptoms of menopause can significantly impact a woman’s quality of life, not all women experience the same symptoms. Women can experience everything from sleep disturbances and mood changes to low libido and hair loss.
Most symptoms begin in perimenopause, or the transition into menopause, and can last 7-10 years in some women. Whether a woman suffers from menopausal symptoms or not, all women can suffer the same consequences as a result of oestrogen loss.
Menopause will impact around half of the UK population directly, and will indirectly impact almost all of us. With women over 50 being the fastest growing workforce demographic, it is estimated that by 2022, 1 in 6 British workers will be women over 50. This means that most women will go through menopause at some stage in their working life.
Research shows that the majority of women are unwilling to discuss menopause-related health problems with their employer, or ask for the support or adjustments that they may need. Furthermore, 90% of women say that their workplace has no support available for employees going through menopause. Considering the vast number of employee’s menopause will impact, businesses are beginning to realise the importance of managing menopause correctly in the workplace.
Here at PCS we understand that menopause can have a significant impact on you and we want you to know that we are doing everything we can to be an organisation that listens as well as ‘does’. Symptoms can vary in frequency and intensity and can be both physical and psychological.
