From Pandemic to PCS Proud - Our Care Staff Stories

Julie De Burgh

1. What or who made you decide you wanted a career in care and is it something you have always wanted to do?

I worked for the NHS for 20 years in an office based job. Part of my role involved conducting hospital monitoring visits. After interviewing junior doctors and consultants and hearing about their experiences in delivering patient care, it made me want to work on the front line helping people and the care sector was where I felt I could benefit clients the most.

2. Can you describe your experience as a Care Assistant, working throughout the pandemic and what impact this experience has had on you?

Working during the pandemic has been challenging and a little scary, especially in the beginning when I had to deliver personal care to clients who had tested positive for corona virus. However, having the appropriate PPE and guidance helped alleviate my fears and I felt good about helping clients through those difficult times.

3. If you had to describe your employment with PCS in three words, what would they be?

Professional

Inspiring

Supportive

4. What inspires or motivates you to get up every day during a pandemic and continue doing your job to the best of your ability?

What inspires and motivates me to do my job is knowing that, as a carer, I am an essential part of what enables clients to stay at home and live the best life possible. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing from a client how much they look forward to your visits and seeing the smile on their face when they see you.

5. Has your new chosen career changed your perspective on the healthcare sector, if yes, please explain how?

Yes. Prior to the pandemic I don’t think, for the most part, the wider healthcare sector or the government recognised what an essential part carers play in contributing to the health and wellbeing of clients living at home or in care homes. The pandemic highlighted the fact that the health and social care sector has not had enough support from the government to consistently deliver high quality care and it is my hope that lessons will be learned and this will change in the future.
